I had the privilege to hear Dr Gangubai Hangal during my college SPIC MaCAY Days. wonderful baritone voice. Its was just mesmerizing to listen to hear Kirana Gharana. Gadag was the actual music town of Karnataka where legendary masters of yore used to live. Its around 30 kms from Hubli. Gangubai and Bhisem Joshi were classmates and studies under the same Guru. Gadag is 50 kms from Hospet (vijayanagar kingdom capital). After Vijaynagar empire was destroyed, the musicians and artists relocated to Gadag and other parts of Karnataka. Dharwad became center for music after the legends shifted their base here.

One thing that stands out in most of the names mentioned by you, is that they were all so Simple. Simple lives, simple thoughts, simple likes and dislikes, simple style of living.. It’s amazing to see such musical stalwarts leading humble lives.

Am sure they will be back to spread more music and peace.
