This is to let you know that the translation is published in Sawai Jai Singh and His Astronomy, second edition, p. 322, published by Motilal Banarasidass. The book is now available on line, and may be downloaded for free.

The date on the inscription is Friday, January 25, 1771. It was deciphered by late Dr. Dr. Pingree.

Meenakshi, my sense of history says that every civilization goes through cycles of evolution – peak – destruction. At any point in time, there is one region which is dominant. In our lifetime it is the USA and the western Europe that is dominant. It is a good inquiry – why did we lose our prime position in the world – there were obviously problems within us, otherwise how can a handful of people come and rule over us. Having said that, hope that time of India comes back again – though I suspect it would be within our lifetime.

I always feel our ancestors were much advanced than us, be it in science, literature, astronomy or eco-conservation.I wonder why they weren’t prepared for the eventuality.Did they not foresee plunder and loot by foreign forces or they were oblivious of these??
And somehow, everything including our country’s glorious past got lost :/

Helene – It needs a bit of scientific bent of mind and a bit of knowledge of Indian astronomy. The astronomical names used at Jantar Mantar were Indian names – probably that is why you got confused. I would always remember Jantar Mantar for being such a simple place to understand the universe.

Fortunately the sun shines most of the year in Rajasthan. 🙂 I liked the colors used for the huge instruments, so pastel like and minimally inspiring. I think a guide that speaks your language and who can explain you properly, is essential. I personally found it difficult to catch on, although I know English well enough, because I didn’t know some astrological terms that the guide mentioned. I don’t exactly remember what terms our guide used, you might remember Anuradha, but they completely confused me at times (was it sun and moon signs of the zodiak or something in that direction?)
