Dear Anuradha,

Your interest in temples are amazing. Perhaps your interest in history has prompted you to look in our own treasure, apparent but hidden in some sense. An interest in right direction. Even more interesting is that we get to see tramples and places from a different details and angle and that’s also makes your post “must read”.

There are many books written on tramples. Robert arnet is one of them but I truly believe ( and perhaps you’ve already thought) that if you come up with a translation of your pictures and write up in a book form, that would be awesomely welcome:-). It would be a different one and to have a copy in the library. Something a digital book be perhaps a good start. Amazon!

Temples not only represent our history but they are icon of more than a history and structure. They’re alter of collective consciousness of a society from where existence of life and sustainability of life reflect. Your work is not only brilliant but just awesome! THANKS!

I am from Kolhapur but I learnt more about Kolhapur from you.
I am proud of my Kolhapur and you gave due justice
The temples from South India are really fantastic but this Mahalaxmi temple is comparable to them. Speaking about Maharastra ,this ranks top. Will you pl. note it and mention so in your next modification of the blog?

The Shri Ambabai Temple of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India, is one of the most famous temples of Hinduism of the state. Kolhapur and the temple is located on the banks of the Panchganga River, it is about 230km south of Pune.

Hi Anuradha,

The temple was built by western chalukya dynasty and the tall spires are the reconstructed ones after the destruction by Bahmani Kings of Ahmednagar by the Chattrapatti Shahu Maharaj (this is was told to my father by a family friend hailing from Kolhapur) . The original spires could have looked like the ones at Haveri, or Pattadakal or even the temples at Jogulamba near Kurnool.
