It is the largest temple in Kerala. After the recent discovery of huge amounts of gold and other precious treasures in its secret vaults, t is now considered the richest religious institution in the world. The huge reclining idol of Lord Vishnu, which as you noted, has to be viewed through three separate doors to be seen fully, is made out of ‘saligramam’, a black stone, considered sacred, obtained from the bed of the Gandaki river in Nepal, a tributary of the Ganges. The huge temple tank in front of the temple is known as ‘Padmatheertham’.
