Liked your writeup on Bengal Souvenirs. My intention is not to point out what you missed out in the list, but to thank you for making an attempt with love. In fact Bengal is so rich in its indigenous handicraft and art that every nook and corner of Bengal you may find some unique article, creatively handcrafted and most form a part of Bengali culture or daily life. But has high potential to be viewed as an art effect or souvenir. “SRIJONEE” is working towards tying up those loose ends.

You missed out Nolen Gur. It is very famous delicacy of West Bengal which is available during winter and people all over the world carries it with them whenever they come to Kolkata. It is now available in tubes at the airport too at Biswa Bangla shop.

In sari shopping section…..”lal pad shada sari” (red bordered white saree) had been missed… in durga puja visarjan of the goddess durga is incomplete without this attire. We play sindur khela just before , wearing this gorgous drape..its a symbol of our cultural identity..so it should be also in the bucket list

I really enjoyed this article as I am returning to Kolkata in mid February at the end of a long trip to India. I partially grew up in Kolkata in the time in which it was Calcutta and my grandparents are buried there and the paternal ones are buried in Asansol. There is a lot of our family history in Bengal also at Chandinagar with the French ancestors. I was given some Dokra craft at a conference in Edinburgh on 16th November 2017. Two beautiful big pieces which are pretty stunning…and heavy! I also recall the lovely textiles, and other beautiful crafts. I look forward to eating russigoolahs, mishti doi, bhekti fish, and would love some Bandel cheeses and also Aam sath, which is a sort of preserved mango that used to be sold in the New Market. It will be great to be back, I did write of my first return 20 years ago in my book India: The Peacock’s Call. I just wish the West Bengal Tourism Department had some energy and intiative…sadly no!
