Sunday Shot: Indian Jezebel Butterfly

3

Indian Jezebel Butterfly also is known as a common Jezebel. Its scientific name is Delias Eucharis. Seen here sucking the juice of wildly growing Lantana Flower. It is one of the most common butterflies seen in India. Red, Yellow, Black, and White colors form a beautiful and distinctive pattern on the wings of the butterfly. What a beautiful creature.

Indian Jezebel Butterfly – Photography

Lantana flowers are well known to attract a wide variety of butterflies. If you want to have your own private butterfly garden, let the Lantana plants grow around your house. And butterflies will soon follow. You do not need to do much to grow Lantana – it is a wild widely growing plant with multiple flowers. And pretty much fends for itself.

This image was captured in the fields of Taleigao, Goa. One can find a variety of butterflies in this area during the post-monsoon season. All that one needs to do to photograph them is have patience. And follow them until they land on one of these flowers.

About the Butterfly

They have a wingspan of about 5-6 cm. The upper side of the wings is orange with black markings, and the underside is yellow with black markings. The male and female butterflies are similar in appearance. It is a non-migratory butterfly and is found throughout the year in its range. They are active during the day, and they roost in trees at night. It mimics the appearance of the unpalatable monarch butterfly, which helps it to deter predators. A fast-flying butterfly, it can fly up to 50 km per hour.
